Am planning to visits family who live in remote village approx 30k from Syrian border,Turkey this Feb with my 3yr old. Am I mad?.
Family in the area say it is safe but I am worried about escalation of Syrian conflict.
Many foreign governments are warning their citizens to reconsider their need to travel to areas close to the Syrian border because of the uncertain security situation. Those kinds of warnings are not made lightly. However they do tend to be a bit generic, and there's no substitute for detailed on-the-ground knowledge, which is why you should quiz your relatives in more detail about exactly what's happening in their region.
There are presently 130,000 Syrian refugees in UN camps inside Turkey - note they are in camps, it's not just a mass exodus and chaos.
Perhaps your relative's village is far from any of these camps.
As best as I can tell the camps are located at:
Yayladagi, Altinozu, Osmaniye Ceydetive, Islahiye, Kahramanmaras, Oncupinar, Nizip, Karkamis, Adiyaman, Akcakale Suleman Sah, and Ceylanpinar Telhamut.
Hope that helps.
