What can I see in Flores Indonesia & is it save to travel by a scooter around Flores? 8 months agoAnswered by test via WorldNomads.com
Hi there! I think seeing the Komodo dragons and snorkeling with Manta Rays was an amazing experience for my RTW trip. However, Flores is too expensive for its own good and ended up leaving 5 days earlier than planned. Definitely only buy a one-way ticket (through DPS is cheapest) and decide for yourself. I'm newer to riding a motorbike and didn't want to chance the winding roads, but if you know how to drive one, I heard it's pretty easy. I stayed at Green Hill in LBJ, and it was ok. Don't stay outside town unless you want to negotiate a price every time with a taxi driver. Unfortunately locals are infamous for taking advantage of tourists, and with a 1-star hotel for $45 usd / night as the best accommodation, they need to rethink their strategy. Also, if you take a day trip to Komodo, do not pay more than 400K with a company. Even with all the "bad" I'm happy I went, but after 3 days I was ready to leave. Hope this helps! 7 months ago
Flores is one of the most amazing islands on the planet. It is mountainous, lush and the hillsides are literally covered with wildflowers, hence the name. Riding a scooter is a fantastic way to see the island but the distances are long and I'm not aware that you can rent one in one town and return it in another. The roads are windy and narrow but there's not a lot of traffic.
The highlight is viewing the Kelimutu volcano which has 3 turquoise-colored craters. The colors change in different years and have ranged from red to black. Most people go up at 5am to watch the sunrise.
Komodo and Rincon are neighboring islands where the Komodo dragons live. It is best to spend a night on a boat so you get to do a dragon-hunting hike in the morning when they come out of hiding. 4 months ago
