I've just booked a ticket to Panama for a month with my American Express card, which gives great insurance for the first 14 days of the trip.
Do I add World Nomads insurance just for the last 2 weeks of the trip (perhaps with a day overlap), or do I need World Nomads insurance for the entire month?
Hi, TravelEater - Katrina from WorldNomads.com here.
First and foremost, each policy is likely to be different, so you should read the policy wording for each plan carefully to find out what's covered and what's not covered and the limits and conditions of cover that may apply. That might make your decision easy if you think the policy we offer provides more suitable cover than the AMEX policy.
For peace of mind, it's always easier to buy a policy to cover your entire trip. That way there is no overlap of policies and you're covered under the terms of one policy.
However, be aware, if you do buy a second policy for the last 2 weeks of your trip, then there may be limits to the cover if your expenses continue in the last 2 weeks of your trip. It depends on what happens to you and when.
- if you're injured by chance on the last day of the 1st policy, yet you don't get treatment until the next day, you wont be able to claim your medical expenses on either policy, as the incident happened before the 2nd policy began and the expenses incurred were after the 1st policy ended; or
- if you have an unexpected injury or illness during the few weeks while travelling on the AMEX policy, then this condition may not be covered on the 2nd policy as it may be considered a pre-existing condition (and the plans we offer for Canadians don't cover pre-existing medical conditions which occur before the policy starts). So you may be able to claim the cost of your medical treatment on the first policy, but they may limit that cover to 14 days as it's then expected you would be returning home.
And finally, if you do have 2 policies you cannot make a claim on both for the same expenses (that's double dipping!). If you can claim from anyone else, the insurer will only make up the difference.
If you have other specific questions about the plans we offer, you can ask our customer services team directly (we like to keep Ask A Nomad just for travel related questions, not insurance specific Q&A): http://www.worldnomads.com/contactus.aspx
