Am I going to get sick from the food in India?"

I ate on the street and with the locals in the places they ate and never got sick. While it might be just a matter of time, if you follow my three rules above it goes a VERY long way to avoidance. over 9 years ago

When is the best time to visit?

Best time to visit is Cherry blossom festival in the Spring. It's always spectacular. The only problem is that the blossom only lasts a few days so getting the timing of a trip just right is more luck than judgement. October is the other great time to go when all the leaves are falling. At any times of year, experience a traditional Onsen ... I frequently go to the ones on the Izu peninsular which are near-ish to Tokyo. (see http://journals.worldnomads.com/simon_monk/country/107.aspx for pictures, stories and links) over 9 years ago

What are some good places to visit in Indonesia? Is it easy to get around between cities/towns?

More specifically, the village of Ubud on Bali and its surrounds is a must. And to answer the other half of your question, Indonesia consists of 13,000 islands with lots of different religions and cultures. In some places you'll be fine, in others, you'll have to take a little more care. I would suggest you do some reading as to how to dress and behave in public so as not to cause any unintended offence. over 9 years ago

Has anyone driven all around the coastline of Borneo? I'm thinking of starting and finishing in Kuching via Brunei, Sabah and Indonesia.

... I don;t know about driving but from my experience, most travel was by boat, light plane or bus ... and lots and lots of walking! over 9 years ago

Am I going to get sick from the food in India?"

Not at all. I just got back from 3 weeks there with my young family no problem at all. Three rules though: 1. Take mountains of antiseptic handwipes, use them all the time and wah your hands at every opportunity but particularly before eating food. 2. 101: Don't drink the water. Just drink bottled water. 3. Only eat vegetarian food. While this might be boring, it is also highly effective. Enjoy over 9 years ago

How easy is it to island hop?

Island hopping from Timor right across to Java is really very easy. Just show up and work it out as you go. Some of the 'ferries' are, ahem, far from safe but it makes for an exciting journey. The best 'ferry' I've ever taken was from a little village called Nggela a famous weaving village on the island of Flores. Highly recommended if you are the adventurous type. over 9 years ago
