Road trip down the Oregon coast

Hi Ian, There are heaps of lovely beach towns along the way from San Fran north. Once you hit Washington, you'll need to make a choice either to go inland to Seattle or up along the coast. The Washington coast is quite wild and sparsely populated compared to the Oregon coast. There are still towns, but the beaches are not developed. Makes for awesome camping, especially up near the tip of the Olympic Peninsula. I'd be guessing to say how long the trip would take you, but Google Maps should give you a decent estimate of the driving time involved. over 8 years ago

Where is the number 1 place to go in the US for about a week - anywhere, but more scenery orientated?

The most dramatic mountain scenery in the States (IMO) is Glacier National Park in Montana. It's not the easiest place to get to, but it's worth it. There's heaps of hiking and river rafting among some of the most beautiful glacial formations you'll see anywhere short of the Himalaya. almost 9 years ago

Are there any good festivals in New Zealand worth checking out?

Depends on what you're into. Splore is one of the biggest: http://www.splore.net/ almost 9 years ago

For a road trip to Cairns, is it cheaper to hire a campervan or to hire a car and stay at backpackers? We're 2 adults + 2 kids.

Hey everyone, Thanks for your replies! As we have limited time, we've decided to bite the bullet, money-wise, and fly to Cairns from Sydney. This way, though it costs more, we get to maximize our time at the reef. Any tips for tour companies in Cairns (snorkeling, not scuba) would be greatly appreciated! about 9 years ago

    Things to look out for

Prepare to be overwhelmed with colors, scents, and "friendly" offers of everything from fine carpets to hashish. Marrakech is awesome. Some of the vendors can be quite aggressive, so stand your ground and *never* buy something for the first price you're quoted. Negotiation is part of the culture, so don't feel weird about it. Enjoy the process and remember, to get the best price, you need to willing to walk away from the deal. If you can, try to get up into the Atlas mountains to the east of the city. They're some of the highest mountains in Africa and are just spectacular. over 9 years ago

    Recommended youth hostels in Sydney?

I've stayed at the Sydney YHA. It's decent and pretty cheap, definitely central to things, if a little dull. I don't know the Green Tortoise, so I can't comment on whether it's similar. over 9 years ago
